The Repeat Customer Math
Let's calculate lifetime value (LTV) for a restaurant customer. Average spend per visit: ₹800. Visits per year if they become a regular: 12. Years as a customer: 3. Total LTV: ₹800 × 12 × 3 = ₹28,800. Cost to acquire a new customer via Meta Ads: ₹150–₹300. Cost to bring back an existing customer via WhatsApp: ₹30–₹50. That's a 5× difference. And a customer who visits twice is 5× more likely to become a regular than a one-time visitor. The entire game is getting that second visit.
Why Customers Don't Return
It's almost never the food. Indian restaurant food quality is generally high — competition ensures that. Customers don't return because: they forget your restaurant name (they visited 15 restaurants last month), they got no follow-up after their visit (no thank you, no reminder, no offer), they found a new place on Instagram, or they simply don't have a reason to choose you over the 20 other options within 2km. The solution isn't better biryani — it's better follow-up.
The 4-Message WhatsApp Retention Sequence
Day 2: Thank You + Special Offer
'Hi [Name], hope you enjoyed your meal at [Restaurant] yesterday! As a thank you, here's 10% off your next visit — valid for the next 14 days. Book your table: [link].' This message serves two purposes: it shows you remember them, and it gives a reason to return quickly. The 10% discount costs you ₹80 on a ₹800 bill but secures a ₹720 repeat visit you wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
Day 7: Weekend Special Announcement
'Hi [Name], this weekend we're serving our special Hyderabadi biryani — limited plates only. Want to reserve yours? Reply YES and we'll hold a table for you.' Include a photo of the dish. Visuals increase response rates by 40%. The scarcity ('limited plates') creates urgency.
Day 30: Menu Update + 'We Miss You'
'Hi [Name], it's been a month! We've added 4 new dishes to our menu — including the butter chicken pizza everyone's talking about. Come try it this week and get a free dessert on us.' The 'we miss you' framing is psychologically powerful. The free dessert (cost: ₹80) drives a full meal visit (revenue: ₹800+).
Birthday: Personalised Celebration
'Happy Birthday [Name]! 🎂 To celebrate, we're giving you a free main course + dessert on your birthday week. Valid any day this week — just show this message. Book here: [link].' Birthday messages have the highest open and redemption rates of any restaurant communication. Collect birthdays at billing or via QR code.
How to Collect Customer WhatsApp Numbers
- Table QR code: 'Scan for our digital menu and weekly specials on WhatsApp.'
- Receipt print: 'Save our WhatsApp for exclusive offers: [number].'
- Google review QR: Ask for a review and opt-in to WhatsApp updates simultaneously.
- Reservation form: Add a WhatsApp number field with clear value: 'Get booking confirmation and special offers on WhatsApp.'
WhatsApp Community for Loyal Customers
Create a VIP broadcast list of customers who've visited 3+ times. Share weekly specials before they're announced publicly. Offer first dibs on event nights, live music, and seasonal menus. The exclusivity makes regulars feel valued — and they bring friends. One loyal customer who brings 2 new customers per quarter is worth 3× their individual LTV.
Real Result: Restaurant Doubled Monthly Repeat Orders
A casual dining restaurant in Bengaluru implemented the 4-message sequence and table QR collection. Within 60 days, repeat visits more than doubled. The owner spent ₹3,000/month on WhatsApp automation and generated ₹42,400 in additional monthly revenue from repeat customers alone.
